Support survivors and be a part of the change with HAVEN during April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2022

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and at HAVEN, we are planning several events and activities to raise awareness, provide education and support as well as facilitate healing.

April 2022 is the 21st anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, but there are those who have been working to educate and prevent sexual violence for decades. Widespread social activism picked up steam in the 1970s; the first rape crisis center opened in California in 1971.

There are many ways you can get involved this month.

Survivor Rally and Vigil

This annual event honors survivors of sexual assault and supports their healing journey. It is held at HAVEN from 6-9 p.m. April 22. Our Clothesline Project featuring t-shirts designed by clients will be on display and there will be a candlelight vigil and a healing exercise. HAVEN is located at 801 Vanguard Drive, Pontiac, MI 4834.

Poster Project

Through April 30, you can take part by displaying a poster in your workplace or organization. These posters, designed by our Survivors Advisory Board, are free and will be delivered this month. Contact phoskins@haven-oakland.org for more information.

Denim Day

Denim Day, which is held April 27, is an internationally recognized day of action to promote awareness. It was founded in 1999 to protest a ruling by an Italian judge who overturned a rape conviction because the survivor wore jeans. Show your support and solidarity April 27 by wearing jeans and snap a picture and tag HAVEN so we can share it.

About HAVEN

HAVEN is Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. We provide shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to about 30,000 people per year. Our mission is to empower survivors to heal and engage all individuals and communities to address and prevent sexual assault and intimate partner violence – ultimately eradicating it and healing those affected by its injustice.
